thanks for this blog, Eileen! I am from Jersey, living in California, and my family and I are off to Santiago for 6 months starting this summer — i mean winter, in Stgo. I’m so glad to read your blog and see how it is for you — it helps me get a sense of the city, and you know I trust a Brooklynite’s sensibilities… Thank you!

yay! welcome aboard. Also, take anything I say with a grain of salt. I’m snarky, but I’ve been outside of NY for a long time. Let me know as things get closer if I can help out.

I just moved to Santiago (from Colorado) about…oh…6 days ago. Someone recommended I get in touch with you after I posted a comment about searching for an apartment here. I see from your blog that you LOVE your apartment (yes, nice view). I am thinking Providencia, or there abouts, and (unfortunately) I need “affordable” (read “English teacher’s salary LOL) Any advice? Thanks!

    • Eileen says:

If you want to live in Provi, you’re going to have to pay the price, as it ain’t cheap. The farther you are from the actual street of Providencia, the cheaper it is (most of the time), the lower the prices, but you can find something simple and small that should be affordable. Are you looking for furnished or unfurnished? You’ll pay less monthly with the latter. I have a couple of friends that live north of Providencia and they seem to really like it, but it all depends what you like. If I were going to live in Providencia I’d probably choose Salvador towards Bustamante, but that’s because I like old neighborhoods. Living in the centro is cheaper but most Chielans will tell you it’s not safe, though I have not found that to be the case and for pickpocketing and purse snatching, providencia is no great shakes. Not to scare you off of it, just saying.

Hope you find something super! are you looking on portalinmobilario and el mercurio? I found my latest on pi last one just by walking by.

Hi, I’m a teenager how grew up in queens, New York (I’m Chilean by the way) I got here when I was 12 and am now 19, I would like to keep in touch with you and other people who lived in the US to practice my english. You might know that there is almost no one in chile who can speak well in english. Good day ^^!

hi! just got here last week and are very happy with chile connect — an office that helps foreigners find classes, apartments, whatever. their office is in Providencia on Huerten (?) near that big fountain / salvador. we’re still looking for a place (furnished, somewhere near el centro but we’re flexi) if anyone has any suggestions… Thanks!

You never know what you will find on the web! I was searching for the Recreo Metro Stop (Wanted to see where the line goes from/to), and found your cleaver blog. What is really funny, the only other blog I follow is a young lady in Southern Italy (Connection: my NYC wife) who is also a U.S. lawyer that has found peace in this little village overlooking the sea!
We are coming to the Casablanca Valley in November: my wife works for the U.S. Office of the family that owns it and we are coming down for a visit. Very much looking forward to going so far south!

You confirm my beliefs: there is such a thing as the “Travel Gene”, that makes people move around a lot. I’ll not bother you with my list of places. To me, everyone that stays in Scranton or Iowa City or San Jose are the odd ones.

Stupid question, but how do I sign up for the blog by e-mail? I see he Twitter option, and the Flickr option, and the RSS option.)

    • Eileen says:

ooh, good question. People do that? I actually never thought about putting up a button to let people sign up by email, because it’s not something I do myself (receive email updates about posts). But I could put it on as a feature. I shall put it on the list.

Let me know if you’re going to be in Santiago for a bit. You’ll love the Casablanca valley if you haven’t been (and even if you have), it’s a beautiful part of the country. Of course, if you read the blog, you’ll know I think most of the country is pretty excellent. Thanks for dropping by.

I would love some advice if you have it! I’m an American currently living in Aussie (Swiss visa expired), I recently finished grad school and am doing all that I can to travel. Any advice on a career path that could take me abroad?

    • Eileen says:

Rachel, there’s a million things you can do, just depends on your interests! Writer, photographer, foreign aid worker, translator, etc. Or if you have a special skillset, just go do whatever it is you do elsewhere. I never could have predicted that my life would lead me to this, now (living in Chile, working as a writer/editor/translator/photographer), so I guess you just have to follow your inklings and ignore the naysayers. Hope you find something awesome. Come and tell me when you do!
